The consumer unit, often still called the fuse box, protects the wiring and the people in a property when something goes wrong. If yours still has rewirable fuses, has no RCD protection or keeps tripping, we can replace it with a modern unit and test the installation properly.
We isolate the supply, remove the old unit, install and connect the new consumer unit, then test every circuit to make sure it is safe and correctly protected. Testing sometimes reveals existing faults, which have to be put right before the board can be signed off. If we find any, we explain them and agree the cost with you before doing extra work.
When the work is complete you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate. Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations, so it is notified to Building Control as the regulations require.
A dual RCD board groups circuits under two shared RCDs, so one fault can switch off several circuits at once. An RCBO board gives each circuit its own combined breaker and RCD, so a fault only affects that circuit. RCBO boards cost more but are less disruptive when something trips. We will recommend what suits the property and your budget.
Most domestic replacements are completed in a day, with the power off for part of that time. Larger properties, or installations with existing faults, can take longer.

Often, yes, if the existing wiring is in reasonable condition. Testing shows whether it is, and we will tell you before any extra work is agreed.
Not always. If the wiring has not been checked for many years, an inspection first can avoid surprises on the day.
